Bradford Council Signs Up To "Time To Change" Pledge

Bradford Council is planning to help tackle mental health stigma by signing the "Time to Change” pledge.

On Monday18 April 2016, Bradford Council’s Chief Executive, Kersten England, will sign the pledge on behalf of the Council.  Time to Change is England's biggest programme to challenge mental health stigma and discrimination.

The Council wants to take action to tackle these attitudes to mental health, focusing on the workplace in particular, and has joined hundreds of organisations which are already involved in a bid to keep staff well for work.

Kersten said:  "I am very proud to sign the Time to Change pledge on behalf of Bradford Council as it is so important that we talk more about these issues in order to help to break down the stigma and improve attitudes about mental health.

"We all have mental health, like we all have physical health and like our bodies, our minds can become unwell.  One in four of us will be affected by mental illness in any year.  The effects are as real as a broken arm, even though there isn’t a sling or plaster cast to show for it.

"Ultimately we need to look after our mental health as much as our physical health so that we can lead happy and healthy lives.”

We have a number of employees who will champion Time to Change.  Their role will include inputting ideas towards the implementation of the Pledge; where they have direct experience and where they can provide support to those colleagues who may be experiencing mental health issues.

The Council is also implementing a new Mental Health Policy detailing the Council’s approach to staff mental health issues as well as Mental Health Training courses.

There will be a new short e-learning course which managers will be able to access.

Bradford Council says it is proud to have signed the pledge and to be focusing on combating the very real issue of the stigma concerning mental health.
