A motorist who gave false details after driving at nearly 100mph on the M1 has been jailed.
Waseem Aziz, 32, of Sherwell Rise, Bradford, pleaded guilty to an offence of perverting the course of justice at an earlier hearing in August and appeared at Bradford Crown Court today for sentencing.
He was sentenced to four months in prison.
On 17 January, 2020, a white VW Passat registered to Aziz activated a speed camera on the M1 between junctions 39 and 40 northbound travelling at 96mph in a 70mph limit. A Notice of Intended Prosecution was sent to Aziz to ascertain who the driver was at the time of this offence.
Aziz provided two different people's details as the driver of the vehicle, both of whom were previous tenants at an address he now owned. Aziz provided this information intentionally to evade prosecution for the original speeding offence.
PC Paul Feather, who investigated this offence, said: "Aziz tried to pin the blame for his speeding on two innocent people. Thankfully we were able to disprove his fabricated version of events and ensure that the correct person faced justice.
"Driving at such high speeds on the motorway put both Aziz and other road users in danger, and the repercussions had he identified himself as the driver would undoubtedly have been serious, including a potential ban from driving. By lying to the police and trying to blame others though, he has made matters far worse and has now been imprisoned for his actions."
