Blackburn with Darwen Council is proposing an investment of more than half a million pounds to speed up the removal of dumped waste and strengthen enforcement against fly-tipping.
More than £500,000 could be invested in tackling fly-tipping across Blackburn with Darwen, under new proposals from the borough council.
Blackburn with Darwen Council is proposing a £505,000 investment, subject to the necessary approvals, aimed at clearing illegally dumped waste more quickly and strengthening action against those responsible.
The funding would support faster removal of waste, increased enforcement, enhanced CCTV and investigative work and targeted action in known fly-tipping hotspots.
Council leaders say the aim is to improve the cleanliness of streets, back alleys and open spaces across the borough.
Councillor Phil Riley, Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said fly-tipping was frustrating for communities, costly to deal with and could leave neighbourhoods looking neglected.
Executive Member for Environment and Communities Councillor Jim Casey said the authority wanted to deliver cleaner streets, quicker action and stronger enforcement.
The council says it already uses prosecutions and Fixed Penalty Notices to tackle waste crime. Last year, it issued 93 fly-tipping penalties worth £32,838.
Recent enforcement action included a case involving around two tonnes of commercial waste dumped in the grounds of Royal Blackburn Hospital. Environmental Crime Officers found a takeaway pizza receipt among the rubbish which helped link the waste to the company responsible.
The company was subsequently ordered to pay more than £20,000 in fines, costs and compensation.
Another business was recently prosecuted for failing to demonstrate that its waste had been disposed of correctly, resulting in penalties totalling £4,133.
Further prosecutions and investigations are continuing.
The council is also encouraging residents to report fly-tipping as soon as possible to help officers investigate incidents and identify those responsible.
