Star India pays £1.97bn for Indian Premier League rights

    The global television and digital rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) was won with a £1.97bn bid by Star India.

    Sony was the second highest bidder for the television rights for the Twenty20 competition, with an offer of £1.31bn.

    Facebook was amongst the 14 companies who made bids for the various different elements of the rights available but Star India’s combined offer won out.

    The IPL began in 2008 and was last won by the Mumbai Indians.
