Kyle Edmund overtakes Andy Murray as British number one

Kyle Edmund has leap-frogged Andy Murray to become Britain’s number one men’s singles tennis player.

The 23-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, which saw him rise to a career-high of 24th in the world.

Murray, who has not played a competitive match since losing to Sam Querry in the semi-finals of Wimbledon last year, has dropped to 29th place.

The 30-year-old Scot had been British number one since 2006. He is set to return to the practice court after having hip surgery in January and could be playing again before the grass-court season begins.
