India’s first school for “Grannies”

Yogendra Bangar, a primary teacher from Phangane a village just outside of Mumbai, is the man responsible for the country’s first and only school for elderly women.

Funded by a local charitable trust, the school teaches the ages between 60-90 how to read and write.

The school has 29 students all of whom live locally. They all wear a colourful pink uniform and have matching satchels.

The school currently has one teacher, Sheetal More who said “These women can now read simple text and carefully practise writing their names - two things they could never do before. The school is playing an important role in fostering respect for women, I hope we can lead by example for other villages.”
