Newsroom Special - Brits overspending by £1.4 billion this Christmas

Christmas is, of course, a time of giving. However, it seems our good intentions are being wasted as we’re set to spend in excess of £1.4 billion on unwanted, unused and in some cases, unopened presents.

New research from GoFundMe revealed that 38% of Brits said giving to charity was the kind of giving that made them feel good, with an overwhelming 78% saying they felt the idea of ‘it’s the thought that counts’ being the most important thing around Christmas time.

Last week was 'Giving Tuesday' - a scheme designed to encourage people to give to charity instead of spending on potentially unwanted items.

To tell us more about the scheme and the psychology behind giving we were joined by clinical psychologist Dr. Jessamy Hibberd and John Coventry from GoFundMe.
