Today people want to see good performances, performances which look real, which are not over-the-top, which are situational. I play the character of Bheem, who feels that you only live life once and to the extent that you can be selfish also and many people are like that. They become so selfish, self-centred, self-absorbed that they don’t realise in that process that they are hurting other people. I related to the character in a way that I saw a lot of men were like that and it was good to play such a character with so many grey shades and sometimes even black! Using your phone to catch up with calls/emails when you’re out and about with your dog is a huge distraction … and thieves know that. Keep your phone in your pocket and those four legs in focus.

Garden access. Is your garden secure? Did you lock the gate? It’s always worth checking. And as before, keep an eye on your dog when they’re outside.

Don’t leave your dog outside shops. Our dogs are so precious and can be taken in a heartbeat. You wouldn’t leave your wallet or handbag unattended so don’t leave your dog alone.

Tinted car windows. A relatively cheap way to keep what’s in your car less visible to prying eyes.

Keep your dog ‘building side’. Where possible, try and keep your dog away from the side of the road when you’re out on a walk. Doing so will make it far more difficult for someone to open a car door, take your dog and drive off.

Poor recall – remember Fenton? If your dog has poor recall, ‘social walks’, on the lead around your local area is fine. Give your dog plenty of opportunities to engage with what’s important to them – sniffing, looking around etc. - and they’ll feel the benefit. You can further add to their enrichment quota by spending time playing some brain games with them at home.

Safer spaces. Scope out some safer, free-run locations where you’ve got clear sight of your dog. Avoid wooded areas and keep to smaller open spaces where you can see all around you and your dog. You could also research private free run fields where you can book a slot and safely run your dog.

High-value food rewards. Small pieces of chicken, cheese or whatever your dog finds utterly delicious are a good way to ensure that your dog is motivated to come back to you.

Extendable leads. Used correctly, extendable leads are a good halfway house between a lead walk and a free run. Make sure you give your dog ten minutes or so at the start of the walk to interact with their environment by opening up the lead so they can shake off the cobwebs and explore safely. If you do this at the beginning of the walk, they’ll be happier to walk on a shorter lead for the rest of the walk.

Be less predictable. Try altering your route and, where practical, the time you walk your dog.

Walk with someone else. Even with the current restrictions, you can still take a walk with someone else as long as you keep a safe distance apart.

Photos. Make sure you’ve got plenty of recent photos of your dog clearly showing identifiable markings etc.

Microchips. Make sure your dog has been chipped and that you keep any changes to your details updated with the database. Also, because chips can move, it’s a good idea to ask your vet to scan your dog annually to check where the chip is.

If the unthinkable happens and your dog is taken, remember, you are not alone. There are plenty of online groups and pages offering help, guidance and support. DogLost is an excellent charity which provides a lost and found service which is free of charge. You should also notify police, dog wardens, vets and local rescue centres

https://www.sunriseradio.fm/on-air/blogs/blog/post/asian-wedding-showcase-attracts-visitors-from-across-the-uk/

The ultimate destination for brides and grooms in Yorkshire, Asian Wedding Showcase, took place at the magnificent Regency Hall in Bradford in March. How does
i t feel to be working with him again?

It was absolutely wonderful. We have done a number of films earlier in my career
with him and our last was Salaam-E-Ishq. He has always been very committed and a
very hard-working person. He was then and he is today as well. I was familiar with
him and his style of working and he likes to rehearse and he likes to get the shot
right. It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with him and more so I think it was more
exciting working with him and Sonam together. I have seen her on our sets when she
was a very young teenager. In Deewana Mastana we had done a 30-day schedule in
Switzerland and Anilji brought his family along so they would visit us on set and hang
out. To be working with Sonam and Anilji was a double pleasure.

Q2: What was it about the story that made you take it up?

When I got the call from VCP Films, Vinod (Chopra) had been producing some of my
favourite films of recent times. Whether it was the Munna Bhai series, PK or 3 Idiots,
he has made fantastic films. So when you get a call from a producer like that you just
know that they’ve got something. Here is a story worth telling otherwise they would
not be telling it. I went to the office to meet the director, Shelly Chopra Dhar, she sat
me down and she read me the script. By the end I had enjoyed the whole script so
much that I was like “I'm definitely doing this”, because this is a script, which tells you
an unfamiliar story in a very familiar way. It’s full of surprises, full of friendship, family
bonding and values. It’s that lovely territory that you know, that you can identify with
completely. This film surprises you, it’s got fun, it’s got warmth, it’s got emotion and I
think it’s the most beautiful package. And I think you should see this film to know
what I’m saying.

Q3: What are the best memories you have from being on set for this
film?

My first day of shooting was in Mumbai and then after that we went off to Patiala to
shoot the home scenes as the whole film is set in North India in a small town. After
that we were shooting in Chandigarh. In Patiala it was winter, very cold and we had
night shoots. We were shooting in a big house and all of us would huddle up and
chat, passing time in between shots. It was real fun. In the daytime, even though we
shoot in the night, you can’t sleep the whole day, so in the afternoon I would go for a
walk. Anilji would be cycling, lifting weights, skipping rope in the garden with his
trainer. He really works hard at his fitness, works hard to look good, and works hard
on the sets. He's so much fun. I also found Sonam to be a warm chatty person. She
always wanted to know how things used to be when I used to shoot with Anilji earlier
and how we used to do things earlier. Very often she would be on the phone
browsing, looking for gifts for Sunitaji (her mother) and she would tell me what the
latest trends were and what’s going on. She was really fun and it was great working
with her. Sonam also told me how she had been an assistant to Sanjay Leela
Bhansaliji for about 2-3 years and that’s how she knew film making so well. I was
amazed at how much she knew about film making, editing, lenses and cameras and
shots and how it ought to be taken or should be taken. I was amazed at her, really
Sonam surprised me very pleasantly.

Q4: What can we expect from your character?

Let me put it this way, Vinod Chopra called me up for this film and when I returned
his call he said “Juhi when we wrote the film and I was writing this character, I
thought you were going to play this role. This role has either been written with you in
mind or once we’ve written it there is only you can play it the way it has been written”.
I was so thrilled; it’s a wonderful compliment to an actor. This role is warm, fun, cute,
and sensitive. It’s what a lot of people have seen me doing and have liked me doing
over the years

Q5: Out of all the actors who forgot their l ines the most?

In this film we’ve had a wonderful star cast. Actors who are really solid whether its
Rajkummar Rao, Anilji, Madhumaltiji who plays Anilji’s mother, Sonam Kapoor and a
host of other character artists, one better than the other who are either theatre artists,
each one was wonderful. So forgetting lines there is no chance. In fact a lot of them
have improvised on their role and made it even more believable and even more real
which have brought their characters alive. I am so happy, it’s a great feeling when
you have worked in a good film, your role is nice but even more than that the film is
fantastic. I think this is one of those films I will always be happy and proud about that
I was a part of this team.

You've been a part of many Abbas-Mustan films but not with the Race franchise. Sunrise Radio broadcasts from its studios in Bradford City Centre across Yorkshire, Manchester & Glasgow via a multitude of platforms (FM - DAB - DAB+ - ONLINE - MOBILE - TABLET - TV).

Usha originally qualified as a teacher, and then worked as a highly paid project manager for a computer company. In 1999 Usha was named Asian Business Women of the Year in the first ever Asian Women of Achievement awards. The national award recognised Usha’s achievement in breaking down the political and typecasting attitude that the Asian Community – including the business community – often works within to become a role-model for all those willing to follow their chosen life paths. Usha then was awarded a further 2 awards in 2000 as Business Women of the Year, by the local business community. In 2001 she was awarded 2nd place in the Women of the year Category at Manchester’s GMEX. In 2009 she was awarded by ABDN the Service To The Community Award followed the next year by a very special Lifetime Award from the Hindu Cultural Society of Bradford. Sunrise Radio was also named the Ethnic media of the Year 2001, 2002 and again in 2004 which can be seen as a testimony to Usha's skills and leadership driven by a self-belief she encourages in all her staff. The awards such as the 2004 Media Personality of the Year Award at the Asian Jewel Awards and the slightly more recent Asian Media Awards for "Regional Radio Station of the Year" recognised not only Usha's success with Sunrise Radio but also her commitment to raising the profile of the Asian business in the Community. Usha's success is built not only on her winning work ethic, but on her willingness to contribute to progression of the Asian Community, being a valuable member of numerous action teams and as a high profile speaker about subjects such as forced marriage, the role of women and the issues facing British Asian youth at International, national and local events. Usha's humanity is such that she feels keenly the compulsion to continue her work with Asian runaways, tackling the issue of forced marriages and ensuring vital communication channels between the Asian communities and various statutory bodies are kept in place.

Just before Christmas 2011 Usha took the bold step to devote programming for an entire week to the issue of Domestic Violence challenging cultural views and even went to Delhi to participate in the peaceful demonstrations in the wake of the terrible rape and murder of a student on a bus in the city.

Usha has instituted a training programme at Sunrise Radio in order to tackle the lack of opportunities presented in the world of broadcasting in which Asian talent is often not nurtured or encouraged by the wider industry or by the Asian community. Usha strives to ensure that the Bradford station can be a flagship for the professionalism, quality of service and high entertainment standards currently being offered in Asian broadcasting despite the limited number of Asian stations nationwide. In 2016 Sunrise Radio was honoured with the "Regional Radio Station of the Year" Award at the Asian Media Awards further showcasing the impact that a once fledgling station has had across the media industry over 28 years.

Looking to the future Usha (alongside her son Raj) has a strong vision, developing the core business and recently Sunrise Radio became the first UK Asian FM commercial station to develop dedicated APPs available on Google Playstore, Apple App Store, Apple TV App Store and Amazon App Store.

Usha is a role model in every sense of the word for all women from all backgrounds with her determination to fight the limitations or prejudices in a business world which hardly holds out arms of welcome to the female owner of a commercial station in the UK or is shackled by the outdated prejudices from the male members of the Asian Community towards a single Asian mother in such a prominent position. Tasked by the NSA’s Jane Marke (Toni Colette) with retrieving ‘Pandora’s Box’ – a nifty little gadget capable of hijacking and weaponizing satellites – the third installment in the franchise sees Padukone and Diesel (joined by Donnie Yen, Ruby Rose, Nina Dobrev, and Rory McCann) in a race against time to save the day.

Listed by Forbes as one of the highest paid actresses working today, 31-year-old Deepika Padukone is one of the movie’s most beloved stars in her native India. Her collaboration with co-star Vin Diesel and director DJ Caruso (I Am Number Four) in xXx marks her Hollywood debut.

Sunrise Radio spoke with Padukone about the making of her new film in Mexico City.

What’s it like making your Hollywood debut?

It’s been so exciting and so much fun. I think this was the most perfect launch of a new film that anyone could have asked for, period, especially considering what a big franchise movie it is and that Serena, my character, has such a strong part - so different from the way we’ve seen women in action films before. I think all of these things made this experience, for me, truly special.

Tell us about your character, Serena Unger, and how you approached her. I think my approach was pretty organic. For me, Serena is someone who’s very today, very contemporary. And she’s also very relatable. I remember watching action films when I was a little girl and thinking ‘Why am I watching this movie?’ Because there was nothing to relate to. When I read the script of xXx and saw what an important role Serena plays in the story, first as an individual – strong, confident and intelligent - and then how she works with others to form a team and even lead the group when she needs to… Well, I was hooked. She has a lot of fun moments as well and a lot of romantic moments too… I think all of these things make it so, so relatable, especially for women. I think every woman has that strong, heroic voice inside them. I think Serena is the representation of that voice.

It seems like the part was written specifically for you.

In a way, yes… Vin and I had begun working together on another project that didn’t work for logistical reasons. But I had such a great experience when I met him and he remembered me from that when he decided to revive XxX. And so I didn’t have to audition for the role. It just landed in my lap because I was right for the part. Everyone now, of course, is asking me “How does it feel to represent your country with this film?” I think all of those things are amazing, but as an actor the most important thing is just to fit the part… And so I think that it’s very, very flattering. Especially that when they decided to write the film, they thought of me first.

What kind of training did you do to prepare for it?

The physical part of it was what I needed to focus on most. The character herself was very relatable, as I said. It was something that was very organic. But the gun training, the weapons, the knives – those are the things that I needed to work on. I had done an action film in India before. But it didn’t involve any weapons. The minute you have weapons involved, the kind of focus and concentration that’s required is much more intense. And so to get there, we would rehearse every weekend. We’d film Monday to Friday, and then train over the weekend to make sure we’d get it right.

What was it like working with Vin?

I felt very comfortable. I think it helped that I’d met him before and that we had that connection. So when I walked onto the set, I felt like I already knew him. It was not a new relationship that I had to discover. But also there was DJ Caruso. You know, it’s so important to have a director who believes in you and who keeps feeding you that energy and making you believe that whatever you’re doing is beautiful and amazing. At least, I’m that kind of actor. I need my director to keep telling me that I’m doing well, because that gives me the confidence to do even more. So my sense of confidence and comfort came from Vin, but a lot of it came from DJ as well. It really came from both of them.

What was the vibe on set like? From what I’ve heard, it sounds like the cast formed a special bond making the movie?

Absolutely, films will come and go but it’s the experience that stays with you forever. We became a real family making this film. And I think everyone really gave their best effort to make the best film possible.

What was it like to be finally filming the action sequences? Is there a particular scene that stands out for you?

There are a couple. First, there’s the one after the grenade sequence where I take down those Russian guys in hand-to-hand combat… I was in so much pain after that day! You know, almost a week after that I still couldn’t move (laughs)... The other fun sequence for me was the one with Ruby Rose, where we’re both firing weapons. We had to train constantly to get all the elements right for that, because we had to be perfectly in synch with each other. That was another really great one for me… In the film it takes place in slow motion. It’s an action sequence, but it almost looks like a beautifully choreographed dance scene.

How does your Hollywood experience compare with your Bollywood one? How are the two different and how are they similar? And how will it affect your career?

They’re exactly the same. The same energy, the same love, the same work, the same enthusiasm, the same ups and downs that any film would go through. I don’t know how my life is going to change after this movie releases. I honestly don’t know if any of that is going to be different. But the filming experience for me was exactly the same as it was back home.

We’ve talked about how the part was written with you in mind. Did you have any additional input as to her development before the cameras rolled?

I actually went in a couple of weeks before they needed me to start filming and I remember doing this brainstorming session with the writer and with my director. We sat locked up in my room for an entire day, just going through it, scene by scene. She was already a well written character. But there were certain things that I thought I could add, certain things I could remove, certain feelings or emotions to highlight, which only an actor can do when you step into it and you ask certain questions. So I went through that entire process with the writer and director and I think that for me was the most fruitful experience. Because once we had that out of the way, when I actually started filming, I had no questions. I had no doubts. I knew what I was doing with Serena. I knew where her journey started and where it was going to end.

What was it like watching the finished film for the first time?

My first reaction was that we made such a beautiful movie that’s also entertaining and fun. Obviously, it’s got the adrenaline. But there’s also a socially relevant message there. It’s very difficult, I think, to come across scripts that have both. Sometimes you have films that really have a very strong message, but they’re not very entertaining. And then you have the entertaining films that just leave you feeling nothing. For me, xXx is unique. It has all the action and adventure, and it’s fun. But at the same time, it makes you think. Best of all is how DJ Caruso has blended it all together so seamlessly.

Will there be more films in the franchise? And if so, will you be back for more?

Will the franchise continue? I don’t know. I think it’s too soon to tell. I think we first need to share this film with the world before we can think of anything else… Right now we’re just focusing on sharing this with the world.

XxX: Return of Xander Cage is in cinemas.

#sunriseradio

As one of the leading Hair and Makeup Artists, I am always asked the same question. One of my patrols was particularly busy and, as all of my officers were already committed with various incidents across the borough, I found myself transporting a detainee in a police van to a nearby custody unit. I haven't done that in a while and it was a reminder to me of how multifaceted our policing services are and how incredibly skilled my officers have to be in a whole myriad of ways. I also got involved with arresting a burglar and assisted a vulnerable individual in the midst of a mental health crisis. It was humbling to witness the compassion shown by my officers and to be reminded that they do so much more than just traditional policing. This recent experience made my visit to the new suite at the Weston London Mental Health Trust Facility far more enlightening. Thames Lodge, the new medium secure unit, will enable more care to vulnerable people and ensure that they are provided with a modern and welcoming environment in a building that is fit for purpose. It was a pleasure to meet several of the staff and I want to thank them for the opportunity.

I also had the great pleasure of visiting Christ the Saviour Primary School and meeting some of the pupils to present them with various awards during their morning assembly. I certainly spotted some future Ealing police officers among them! Thank you to all at the school for their warm welcome and support. We are one of the few boroughs in the MPS to have successfully involved primary schools in our volunteer police cadet scheme, an achievement we are proud of and will be continuing to develop throughout the year.

Victims are at the very heart of everything we do and so I want to ensure that this is reflected in our user surveys. During the year, a number of surveys take place across London to measure both your confidence in us and the roles we perform, as well as the satisfaction that victims of crime have in the service they receive from us. The results in these surveys are extremely important as they indicate whether our communities and residents think we are doing a good job. We have perhaps not been quite as vocal about the excellent work and results we achieve here in Ealing every month and so I want to ensure we keep you as well informed as we possibly can through our social media sites (Twitter @EalingMPS and our new Facebook page www.facebook.com/ealingpolice ) and with the help of our local news. We are also working with the Ealing Safer Partnership to establish a better way of jointly communicating our partnership initiatives so that we can be sure that you all know exactly how much we care and do to continually make Ealing a better and safer place. In the meantime, if you have been the victim of crime and want to discuss any aspect of the investigation further at any time, then please do make contact with my officers who will be happy to help you.

We also need your help, especially to combat crime. There is a lot you can do to keep yourself and your belongings safe and secure. We have recently experienced a rise in theft of motor vehicles, particularly involving scooters, and so my Safer Neighbourhood teams have launched Operation Titan to tackle the problem which will involve increased patrols and various enforcement tactics. In most cases, car crime is committed by opportunist offenders who often take only seconds to get inside a vehicle. So, close your windows, lock all doors and activate any security devices when leaving the vehicle even for just a moment or two. Please also remember to check your doors manually as automatic locking devices can't always be relied upon. We are committed to combating car crime, reducing the opportunities and arresting those involved so success requires a joint effort between all of us.

As the summer months bring with it some warmer weather (hopefully), we usually experience an increase in anti social behaviour. This type of disorder can seriously affect peoples lives and the general environment of the borough. We are fortunate that Ealing is a borough where partner organisations regularly come together and work hard to solve local problems. We are always keen to hear about what matters to you and you can tell us by attending the Ward Panel meetings that are held in your local area. Ward Panel details can be found on the MPS Ealing borough web site or by contacting your local ward police Safer Neighbourhood Team via the same web site.

And just a final mention before I say goodbye. Our online guest blogger Usmaa gives her opinion.

Chotto Desh (literally ‘small homeland’) is a multicultural dance performance set in Bangladesh and Britain. The sole performer is Akram Khan who manages to hold the stage with only a couple of props and an animation sequence which lasts about ten minutes. He plays a young man who loves to dance but has a challenging relationship with his well-meaning but controlling father. The supporting characters of the father and grandmother are never seen on stage – we only hear them speak on voiceovers.

Although it took time to build momentum, the performance soon developed into a captivating story of inter-generational conflict. What I loved about the performance was that I was torn between feeling the frustrations of the invisible father while also empathising with the son trying to follow his dream.

Having written this review a few days after the show, I almost feel that the father and grandmother were on stage. It’s a huge feat to create such three dimensional characters by only allowing us to hear their voices. The tension between father and son is clear and the bond that the central character has with his grandmother is portrayed beautifully.

The animation sequence was the highlight in my opinion. Khan dances behind a transparent screen with simple line drawing animation running of forests and demons. It is truly magical.

The sequence during which Khan playfully paints a face onto the top of his head is genius and seemed to delight both the adults and the children in the audience.

All in all, I would highly recommend this family show. I left the theatre wondering if I make some of the parenting mistakes Khan’s father made. After seeing Chotto Desh, I would like to think I will make more of an effort to allow my children to pursue their own dreams. Chotto Desh changed me in a small way which I think is a great indicator of what an impressive performer Khan is.

Usmaa Choudry
