Swine flu deaths rise to over 1,000 in India this year

    Over 1,000 swine flu deaths have been recorded in India over the past eight months.

    The number of deaths this year is four times more than fatalities recorded over the equivalent period in 2016.

    The last three weeks have seen the highest number of deaths, at 342.

    The data, published by the Union Health Ministry, reveals that the western state of Maharashtra is the worst affected, where the death toll stands at 437 so far this year.

    In 2009-2010, India was hit by a severe wave of the virus, which killed over 2,700 people.
