Priyanka Gandhi enters Indian politics

Priyanka Gandhi, sister of the leader of the opposition party in India, has launched her career in politics ahead of a general election in May.

Ms Gandhi has campaigned extensively for her brother and mother Sonia Gandhi in earlier elections, but had refused a formal political role for herself.

She has now been appointed the party general secretary for the eastern part of the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh.

Her brother Rahul heads the Congress Party, which is aiming to topple Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP government in the upcoming elections.
