Pakistan has denied India's request to allow Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plane to pass through their airspace ahead of his trip to the United States of America
The Indian Prime Minster was set to travel to the U.S on 20 September to speak at the United Nations General Assembly session, and had sent a formal request to Pakistan last week asking permission to travel through their airspace.
In a statement, India said: "India has formally requested Pakistan to allow the use of its air space for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flight to New York, US.
“Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the country will not allow the Indian prime minister's plane to pass through its airspace.”
Subsequently, the flight will be diverted, adding a further 2,890km onto the journey and an extra two hours and 45 minutes travel time.
The refusal comes less than two weeks after Pakistan rejected India’s requests to allow President Ram Nath Kovind to travel through their airspace on an official trip to Iceland.
