Number of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh surges

The number of Rohingya Muslims fleeing violence from Myanmar into Bangladesh has soared.

It is estimated around 270,000 refugees have entered the neighbouring country, an increase from an estimate the day before by around 100,000.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Vivian Tan, said the agency had found new pockets of refugees in border areas.

Refugee’s from Myanmar’s Rokhine state have detailed harrowing experiences alarming observers to potential ethnic cleansing in the area.

It is suspected a large military crackdown was initiated following an attack on police posts by a Rohingya militant group.
