Millions of Indians gathered to bathe at a holy site on the most auspicious day of the Kumbh Mela.
Tens of millions of pilgrims took the dip at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers in Allahabad city (recently renamed Prayagraj) in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.
The event is billed as the world's biggest human gathering.
