Inquiry launched as police beat female protesters in India

An investigation has been launched in India after police beat female university students protesting against an alleged sexual assault.

Students at the Banaras Hindu University in Utter Pradesh state held protests against the university due to the institution allegedly ignoring their complaints of sexual harassment, including a recent sexual assault.

Police have said students threw stones at them, set cars on fire and damaged university property, claims the students deny.

A video shows what appears to be officers attacking a female student with sticks after charging a crowd.

Two policemen have been suspended over the incident.
