India’s Shimla asking tourists to stay away amidst water crisis

Residents from Shimla in India’s northern state of Himachal Pradesh have asked tourists to stay away amidst a deepening water crisis.

The appeal was sent out via social media following clashes with authorities over the region’s water resources being stretched to the limit.

On Tuesday 29 May the city asked for 45 million litres of water but was only provided with 18 million.

The crisis comes during Shimla’s peak tourist season, putting additional pressure on water resources.
