India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu is tense following at least 11 deaths in violent environmental protests.
Residents of the port city of Tuticorin have been protesting over a smelter operated by the Sterlite Copper subsidiary of the Vedanta Resources conglomerate.
They claim the factory is polluting ground water in the area and threatens the fishing industry.
Vedanta has denied all the allegations.
Paramilitary forces are expected to come to the area following two days of clashes, in which protesters were killed in police fire.
A police official claimed 18 officers have been injured.
