A senior judge has been found guilty of contempt in a top Indian court and sentenced to six months in prison.
Justice Chinnaswamy Karnan was found guilty of writing letters and making allegations against fellow judges today, 9 May.
This is the first time that a high court judge has been jailed for contempt in India's judicial history.
Justice Karnan, from the Calcutta High Court, was stripped of his powers in February.
He had sent a letter to the Prime Minister in January accusing 20 judges and three law officials of corruption, though he failed to provide any evidence.
A seven-judge Supreme Court bench ordered a psychiatric evaluation of Justice Karnan by a panel of government doctors, to which he responded by ordering similar tests for the seven top court judges.
The Supreme Court banned Indian media from publishing any of Justice Karnan’s statements on Tuesday.
