Indian guru jailed over journalist’s murder

A court in India has handed a life sentence to a self-styled guru over the murder of a journalist in 2002.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, 51, is already serving a 20-year prison sentence for raping two female followers.

Ram Chander Chhatrapati, a newspaper editor, was killed after exposing the sexual abuse of women in the Dera Sacha Sauda sect, in the north-western city of Sirsa.

Three other men were also given life sentences.

Ram Rahim Singh had long painted himself as a pious spiritual leader, encouraging followers all over the world to take vows of abstinence and celibacy.
