India’s Supreme Court has ruled that the world’s largest biometric database system is constitutional and does not violate privacy rights.
Critics have claimed the Aadhaar ID system, which covers welfare, tax payments and access to social services for more than a billion Indians, could infringe on privacy and be exploited by private companies.
Though the court has ruled Aadhaar lawful the scope of the system has been reduced. Judges decided it could not be compulsory for bank accounts, mobile connections or school admissions.
