Goods carriers have gone on strike in Karachi in protest against the restriction imposed by the Sindh High Court on the movement of heavy vehicles within the city’s jurisdiction.
The transporters said the restriction would result in extra cost because their vehicles would have to take an alternative route to enter the city, which is 180km longer than the previous route of 8km.
The president of the Transporters of Goods Association Anwar Soomro has threatened a countrywide strike if the government did not take notice of their grievance.
About 7,000 to 8,000 containers and goods carriers with raw material, imported food and other items travel daily out from Karachi Port.
A concern for transporters is that a large quantity of imported food items, like cereals and other goods mostly consumed during Ramadan, are stockpiling instead of being sent into the country.
