A traumatised family realised their new-born baby was alive just minutes before its funeral, in Rajasthan.
A woman gave birth without the presence of a doctor in a government hospital in the Bundi district. She was told by a male nurse that the baby was dead and that the child should be taken for burial.
The family commenced funeral proceedings but were shocked when the baby girl began crying and was still alive.
It is reported that the family revisited the hospital to lodge a severe complaint of negligence but the Deputy Controller, Dr OP Verma, defended his staff and said that because the baby showed no movement after the delivery she was declared dead.
The family have questioned the complete absence of a doctor at the delivery, an incident which highlights the struggling state of affairs for the health department in the district.
