In an initiative to curb street crime against women and to get more women to file complaints, the Delhi Police recently restarted operations of the women's bike squad, known as Raftaar.
The squad, which was launched in March, will be patrolling in areas where currently there is growing concerns of safety for young women. They have already started patrolling in the campus areas of Delhi University.
Delhi Police officials say that every police station will have two members of the women's bike squad and they will be provided with grey bikes, an AK-47, body-worn cameras, pepper spray and other high-tech equipment once the squad is formally launched.
Rekha Mishra, Sub-Inspector and In-charge of the women squad in South Delhi, said: "We do regular patrolling in our vans and on cycles too but with the bikes, the female police officers are always on the go and the visibility is much higher. Our job is to tell the girls that they have to be outspoken and that they must report all incidents of harassment to the police."
