Assam shutdown in protest over Citizenship Bill

Protesters took to the streets of Assam in northeast India over amendments to a citizenship bill.

The Hindustan Times reports that the bill proposes to grant citizenship to religious minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

A 12-hour shutdown was called by 46 indigenous groups in Assam over fears changes to the bill will marginalise them by encouraging more migrations of Hindus from Bangladesh.

It is estimated around 100 protesters have been arrested.
