15 convicts in Bangalore demand release or euthanasia

Prisoners in Bangalore are seeking release from jail or mercy killing.

15 convicts currently on hunger strike in Bangalore’s central prison have written to chief minister Siddaramaiah, urging him to either consider their early release on grounds of good behaviour or to allow them to opt for euthanasia.

Reports say the convicts have spent more than 15 years in jail.

Between 2012 and 2017, 1,102 convicts from eight central prisons across the state were released on good conduct.

Indian law does not permit euthanasia, even for those suffering from incurable diseases.

In a four-page letter the prisoners said their organs could be donated after their deaths.

Sources in the prison said the 15 convicts began an indefinite fast on Monday, 12 June, and that authorities were in talks with them.
