Following reports this morning (July 2) by members of the public that there were a number of dead fish in the pond in Wilton Park, Batley, parks staff are in the process of removing the fish from the pond.
It is estimated there are up to 100 dead fish. Tests carried out by the Environment Agency have confirmed that the deaths are the result of low oxygen levels following the prolonged dry spell and current heatwave.
With the weekend forecast for continued dry weather, the West Yorkshire Fire Service has volunteered to bring in a tender this afternoon to pump oxygen into the water.
Tom Raper, Parks' Divisional Manager (North Kirklees), said: "I approached the Fire Service who, as a one-off goodwill gesture, said they would help to try to improve the oxygen levels in the pond. Our staff are removing as many dead fish as possible and we are continuing to work closely with the Environment Agency to monitor the situation.
"We apologise for any distress caused to the visiting public this weekend but every effort is being made to prevent further fish losses."
