Four men Given 13 years Following violent disorder at a taxi station

Four men have been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment following violent disorder at a taxi station in Keighley.

The incident took place in the Central Taxi’s booking office in Keighley railway station on Sunday 17 February 2008.

The men, aged from 22 to 28, entered the taxi booking office at around 10pm armed with weapons including a metal bar, which they used to threaten and shout abuse at the station’s booking assistant.   The men’s tirade continued as they broke into the staff office, off limits to the public, destroying the door and began smashing windows and large widescreen televisions mounted to the walls.  Staff that were on a rest were left fearing for their safety and flying glass caused a cut to the head of one of the taxi drivers.  The incident continued, before the men fled the scene in a vehicle waiting outside the taxi office.

British Transport Police Detective Inspector Stuart Mellish said: “This was clearly a planned attack by the vandals, It must have been a terrifying ordeal for the booking office staff and the drivers who were on a rest.

Majid Hussain, aged 28, from Malsis Road, Keighley was given a 12 month suspended sentence and 220 hours unpaid work.

Naheem Mumtaz, aged 22, from Boston Street, Sheffield was sentenced to 21 months imprisonment and a further 18 months for a West Yorkshire Police offence.

Wasim Mumtaz, aged 27, from Carlton Street, Keighley was sentenced to 21 months imprisonment and a further 3 years and 9 months for a West Yorkshire Police offence.

Earlier this year, Mohammed Shabir, aged 27, from Clarendon Street, Keighley, pleaded guilty to violent disorder and was sentenced to 21 months imprisonment and a further 3 years for a West Yorkshire Police offence.
