An operation run by Special Constables has been a success after eleven uninsured vehicles were taken off the roads in Bradford and over a hundred people were given fixed penalty notices. The operation ran over the weekend with 15 Specials taking part. It was to mark National Specials Weekend.
Several roads were targeted during the two day operation - Manchester Road, Sticker Lane, Shearbridge Road, Huddersfield Road, Great Horton Road, Lilycroft Road and Tong Street. One hundred and seven drivers were given fines - 94 of those were for not wearing seatbelts, seven were for having tinted windows and six were for illegal number plates. Twelve other motorists were given fines and points on their licence - six of those were for speeding and the other six were for using mobile phones whilst driving.
Eleven vehicles were seized for having no insurance and four people were arrested - two for being over the prescribed limit and two in connection with immigration issues.
Police also worked with colleagues from Hackney and Taxi Licensing and VOSA. Thirty taxis were checked with three drivers being suspended and three given advice on an issue and 21 prohibition notices were given to drivers whose vehicles had faults that needed rectifying.
Special Section Officer Gerry Slade - who ran the operation - said: "This was a very successful operation. It was not just about prosecuting motorists but also educating them about the consequences of their actions.
We were also able to help some motorists by pointing out major defects on their vehicles which could have proved dangerous."
Inspector Osman Khan - who runs the Special Constables for Bradford South -
said: "The Special Constables who gave up their free time to come in and work on this operation have done a fantastic job. They've achieved a lot in just two days.
As well as all the drivers we were able to stop, there will be those who stayed off the roads altogether because they knew the operation was planned. My warning to them is that we will be carrying out operations like this throughout the year but they won't know where we will be until they're stopped."
