Attempted Armed Robbery By Gang With Iron Bars & Sledge Hammer

Police are appealing for witnesses to an attempted armed robbery to get in touch.

The incident happened at 8pm on Thursday 4th February when a G4S delivery van arrived at the Halifax Bank on Wharf Street, Sowerby Bridge.

Three men who had covered their faces with balaclavas approached a security guard and demanded a cash box. They were armed with iron bars and a sledge hammer.

They then threatened the guard and grabbed the box, leaving it in the bank entrance.

Using the sledge hammer they then attempted to smash a glass door leading into the bank but failed.

The suspects then left the cash box on the floor and fled in a waiting blue coloured Volkswagen Golf car. This was being driven by a fourth male.

The vehicle then made off towards Ripponden. It turned right onto Hollins Lane.

No one was injured during the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw the vehicle immediately before or after the event is asked to contact police on 0845 6060606.
