Kirklees Council will today release funds to tackle potholes which have developed as a result of the recent cold weather.
Days of sub zero temperatures have led to damaged roads, some of which are priority routes across the district.
The boost to Highways from contingency funds means that the repairs can be carried out urgently with extra teams putting the damage roads right.
Cllr David Sheard, Cabinet member for Highways and Transportation,
said: “Releasing this money from contingency funds will mean that we can have 10 teams working on the damaged roads rather than just two. We will also be assessing the roads across the district for further damage.
“With the amount of standing snow we have had and the length of time the temperatures have been below zero the effect has been far worse than we normally get at this time of year. We have already identified urgent potholes that we are repairing and we will be visiting more streets to assess what repairs need to be done.
“Potholes are a relatively easy repair, but when the road surface starts to crumble and break up it becomes more difficult and will take us a little longer to get to. I would ask people to bear with us while we do these repair, many of them are on some of the busiest roads so there may well be some disruption as they are fixed but we will try to minimise it as much as possible.”
